Customer has a complaint about a coolant leak which was at least 5 that I found after taking things apart and the vehicle was draining a battery dead over a period of 3 days.
First tests were the battery draining issues. I pulled the codes from the vehicle first to discover low voltage codes for modules which was expected. I charged the battery for a few hours on low current and de-scale current for about 20 minutes to get the battery refreshed for testing the power draw issue. I started the test with an oscilloscope and amp clamp and turned off the key and exited the vehicle. It’s not a smart proximity key vehicle so I didn’t have to walk completely away. I manually latched the hood, doors, and rear hatch so I could access fuses and modules. I did discover many fuses under the hood were oxidized so every fuse and relay got terminals cleaned good to make sure that wasn’t the problem. The draw was still there. I pulled fuses one at a time.It wasn’t any under hood fuses; it was the fuse box in the back with the spare tire. Specifically the radio fuses. The amperage dropped when I unplugged the fuse so I found the culprit. So I plugged the fuse back in and waited for a few to see if other modules woke up from plugging in the fuse. After waiting a few minutes I wanted to test if the radio would come on and it sure did with no key in the ignition or in accessory mode. Vehicle does have a sun roof and could have leaked and got moisture in behind the dash or it could be from a leaked capacitor or anything. I told the customer and she did not want to fix it so she just wanted to keep the radio fuse out and told me she was going to sell the car after fixing just the coolant leaks. It has transmission and oil leaks and she was notified about all my findings.
Okay, onto the coolant leaks issues… Wow let me tell you how close to a balloon pop several if the hoses were. It had leaks on the connector to the heater core between the firewall and wiper motor area as well as the outlet on the engine, Upper radiator and several other connectors and hoses. I honestly hate when plastic hoses and connections are used on vehicles. They just don’t last at all. Vehicle manufactures need to calm down on plastics just because it’s cheaper. The way they run these hoses all over in multiple places just adds to more failure points. The worst part is to access everything the front bumper has to be removed and the intake manifold as well. I had to call the customer because after removal of the front end and intake manifold I found more hose problems. I called her to explain I found more issues and she really didn’t want to put a lot of money into it just to sell it but you might as well fix it all while you have it opened up. The customer only wanted to replace the leaks and bad hoses so I got those ordered up. Customer also supplied a radiator that was new which was correct and was needed so its getting replaced also. Im probably 4 hours into this vehicle already between testing electrical, removing the front end and taking the parts out and finding the parts online and ordering things. Some hoses you have to get at the dealer. We will see how everything goes and pressure test the system and get the vehicle back on the road.
